Roles of a Counsellor

• To promote and provide a range of individual/group counselling and group guidance services in the educational, career and personal/social areas.

 

• To consult with other professionals in their assessment of students.

 

• To refer students and/or families to appropriate services and community agencies and to liaise between school and community agencies.

 

• To consult and support teachers during the pre-referral stage on emotional, behavioral, personal, social, career and transition related issues.

 

• To conduct comprehensive and individual assessment of students and follow procedures for informed parental consent.

 

• To summarize assessment findings in a written report that will be kept in the student’s confidential file and shared with the ISSP team, including the parent/guardian and when appropriate, the student.

 

• To maintain appropriate records for each student for whom they are providing a direct or consultative service.

 

• To participate as a guidance advisory team member in the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive guidance program.

 

• To assist staff with the delivery of school wide programs such as “Focus on Bullying” and “Focus on Harassment and Intimidation”.

 

• To assist with the facilitation and/or provide input on professional development opportunities for staff, parents, and community.

 

• To assist with the transfer of students and all relevant information for students with exceptionalities.

 

• To remain current concerning the changing trends, resources and programs in guidance and counselling.

 

• To present data on the child’s strengths and needs at the support services planning meeting or provide a written or oral report to an ISSP team representative.

 

• To advise on strategies, curriculum approaches, services and supports, which may be accessed by the child/youth.

 

• To monitor and record the child’s/youth’s progress as determined by the ISSP team.

 

• To assist in writing and implementing any educational component for which s/he has been assigned responsibility.

 

• To provide advice, resources and/or support, in areas of expertise, to others involved in writing the ISSP.

 

• To assist students with exceptionalities at transition stages (elementary/intermediate/senior high/post secondary) by providing them with required information and support to facilitate the transition.

 

• To participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of behavioral management plans for students who present with emotional/behavioral, learning, and/or motivational difficulties.
